Q: Can I change some money when I am at the airport?

A: Yes, the airport usually has bank that provides this kind of service – their exchange rate is fair enough with other banks in the city.

Q: How much money do I need to pay for each meal?

A: In bigger cities the costs are slightly higher. For Shanghai: each meal (in a restaurant / cafe / KFC / McDonalds) inside the shopping malls varies from 20yuan.

Q: What does Chinese food look like, taste like ?

A: The Chinese eat anything, so if you are feeling adventurous, there are plenty of possibilities, especially outside the modern cities. But if you want to play it safe, the Chinese food in western restaurants is pretty similar, although the original Chinese food will often be spicier!

Q: What about the costs for public transport?

A: Buses starts from 1-2yuan (no AC) and 2-3yuan (with AC).
Metro and subways are starting from 3 – 5yuan.

Q: What is the weather like in China?

A: We have four seasons here. It's a big country so the weather depends on your actual location. For instance for Shanghai, see some stats here: Shanghai weather

Q: What should I bring from my country to China?

A: Your electronic plugs, and medicine / prescriptions.

Q: What should I prepare before coming to China?

A: Perhaps learn how to use chopsticks, or even a little bit of Chinese language.
Even though IAESTE China offers the English speaking internship, does not mean local citizens have the standard ability to communicate in Chinese.

Q: How much money shall I bring? What about credit cards and traveling cheques?

A: You can bring cash in US Dollars and Euro – which are easier to be exchanged in the bank (though you will need to stand in line to do that). International credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard can be used in big retail stores, and some ATM Machines (including Visa Electron). However American Express is not well known here in China and only a small part of stores and hotels can accept them. Travel cheques are also more difficult to be cashed in the banks.

Q: How about Chinese people?

A: China is the world most populated country. People are a lot more in your country: you will have no seats in the bus/metro/subway, have to take a line in public services. After a while, you will manage to adapt yourself. Basically they are nice people who would like to be helpful but sometimes language is the problem that occurs misunderstanding and conflict.
