A riot of color life in Brazil
Wang Ting
China Institute of Metbology / Computer Science

"Wanna Yesterday Once More" serves as the most suitable song to express my feeling of Brazil. Being an exchange student of IAESTE, I went to Brazil from September to November in 2002. My work company is Unicamp, in the city of Campinas of Sao Paulo State.

Before I left China, Brazil was just an abstract geographical conception to me. After almost 30 hours on the fly, I told myself it was not a dream. Now I was actually on the land of Brazil. According to the journey from China to Brazil, it was quite reposeful except I was waiting around 2 hours in the Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris because of checking my passport. Actually it was just the first time I got the attitude from European to Chinese.

I was living in a Brazilian family. I think I was highly lucky living with them. Without them my life in Brazil was not an integer. Here please allow me to say thank you to them: Alessandra, her mother and father. The culture of Brazil is totally different from China. Because Brazil is an emigrant country, it is a mixture. You can find almost every kind of color of people in the streets. Ok, here let me first introduce the city I was working and living. My work company is Unicamp, the best university in Brazil. It was located in Campinas, the second biggest city of Sao Paulo State. But my house was in another city, Cosmopolis. It is a little surprising, it is? Anyway, the two cities are not so far away, which should I take at least 3 hours on the way. This was the main aspect leading to my special style of life in Brazil.

My Brazilian family is very topical. Father and mother, one son and one daughter, and a pretty niece. Brazilian people are warm and kind. Even strangers will help you on their own initiative. Because Portuguese is the native language in Brazil, and usually people in university can speak English, you can image how hard when I was alone walking on the street. Once I lost my way home, a girl helped me though we were met on the street. I love the way Brazilian treating others, it seemed you were at home and you were really the friend of them.

Refer to my work; it is not exaggerated if I say I have changed my star on my view to work. I worked in Department of Computer Engineering and Industrial Automation (DCA) of Unicamp in the city of Campinas, which is the best university of Brazil. My responsibility was concerning the computer graphics on the top of OpenGL under Unix. The idiographic work was one part of the whole project-Eter (Electric Deformable Surfaces). It was the model to simulate the moving effect of soft materials. I had to know the principle and tried my best to correct the wrong parameter and finally designed a website to introduce the project. My professor -Wu Shin Ting-- was such an outstanding scholar. She not only taught me the knowledge, but instructed me how to command the new things in the short time and also give me the precise manner of research as well. Daniel, Marcel, Vanio were my colleagues, they got me a big hand. Because I have never touched Unix platform and OpenGL and moreover almost all the reference were in Portuguese, I met a lot of difficulties at first. Fortunately, together with them and others in my same lab, I conquered difficulties and found the right way to do the work.

Of course, all worlds are a family. IAESTE Brazil-CI gave everyone the chance to know about other country's culture. We were coming from almost everywhere of world. I was the only representation of Asia. Though we had a lot of different views, we made good friends. The youth are always flush, we were chattering about our own culture, dancing in Disco, meeting in the bar and enjoyed the crazy Brazilian party. Brazil is the paradise in the view of Westerner. How could we not travel if we already in paradise? CI organized trips once several weeks, it led us know the beautiful beaches, the wonderful sun and kind people of Brazil. A lot of famous place left our laugh and songs and trace of feet. Sometimes we would organize some trip by ourselves, some especial places. The biggest waterfall-Foz de Iguacu, the largest swamp-Pantanal, the most beautiful city-Rio de Janeiro impressed us so much.

The abroad life in Brazil is haunting me all the time. Because of it, I know how to built my own life, how to absorb excel things, how to understand other cultures and so on. I will cherish it forever. Thank you for IAESTE giving me this chance and thank you for all the people helped me.
