Now I still remember the day when I got the invitation from the
IAESTE and EPCOS OHG. I couldn't believe that, but it was true.
I was a lucky dog.
Before I went to Austria, I always considered the Germanic people
as a haughty nation. However, the Austrian totally changed my mind.
As the time was limited, I jumped on the train without the ticket,
worrying about: what can I do? Will they punish me? And the time
was 23:00. I had no idea but to disturb a lady: excuse me, could
you please tell me where is the conductor? Obviously, she couldn't
understand me, but she waked up her husband. Then they didn't only
lead me to the conductor, but also helped me with my luggage. After
it, they invited me to them, we were chatting and laughing all the
way, although it was not easy for us to communicate with each other.
Time passed quickly, about 3 hours late, I had to say goodbye to
them. However, I will remember this kind couple my whole life.
I couldn't forget the first shopping-l bought too many things,
the biggest problem was that I couldn't find the bus or a taxi.
Staring at those five huge bags, I was thinking how to save this
problem, when I lady came to me:" What can I do for you?"
then she sent me back. Can you image, three kilometers away from
my house, with 38C! She became sweating and out of breath. But in
that case she still smiled: when I was a child, my mum always told
me if you give your hand to others when they were in trouble, you
would get help from others when you meet difficulties! Looking at
her back, I felt my tear in my eyes. Thank you very much, warm-heared
lady, if I have chance I will tell you this word thousands times.
In Austria, I met too many friendly persons. When I was shopping,
three gentlemen looked everywhere for the curry-powder just for
me. I had to see a dentist, the staff members on out office checked
their notes for the best one. Before my visit to Vienna, all of
my friends there introduced the interests to me¡A lot
of moving things, a lot of kind people, I would never forget them.
And I made up my mind, when I came back China, I had to try my best
to help others especially the foreigners.
A girl abroad alone, it would be boring, but lucky for me, I shared
a room with a Greek girl. We owned opposite characters but because
of this, we had a great many topics. Form the Great Wall of China
to the Temple in Grace, or from the famous mountains in China to
the beautiful beach in Grace and so on. With a cup of coffee, the
light of candle, we could chat from the sunset to the shining stars.
Of course, we became closed friends within two months.
Before I came to Austria, I considered it as a very modern country,
but after it, I knew I was wrong. Our company was in Deutschlandsberg,
and it was famous for its countryside landscape. Quite a few visitors
said: I lost my heart in Deutschlandsberg. Steeped in tradition,
the town was home of people dreaming of living far away from the
noisy world. We enjoyed out lives everyday. Sometimes we picked
up mushrooms and cooked them ourselves. We were living in paradise.
However, the biggest fun was my dinner. As our company didn't offer
supper, and the restaurants were very expensive, I was determined
to cook myself. It was a hard decision because I hadn't cooked before!
While she was very curious about Chinese food, I had no choice but
to try! At first my food couldn't be eaten at all, but practice
makes perfect. After some time, I became a good cook, not only for
Chinese food, but I could prepare Greek salad and Austrian dessert
as well!
During my training in EPCOS.OHG, my main project was about BOSCH
Bending test, and my goal was increasing the strength of the MLCC.
The first day when I came to the company, my supervisor showed
me around our factory and the lab. They were quite advantaged. After
lunch he gave me some books which were as thick bricks:" I
think you may know about your project from them, and we can start
our task tomorrow!" I was astonished at their efficiency.
The next day I began to know the differences between us. Because
my major is just for this project, I offered some suggestion to
them. At the same time they made a decision: next week we will start
your scheme. Those were their most notable advantage: pay the same
attention on everyone, and treat every detail carefully. Everything
went on well. They trusted me and gave me a lot of freedom, from
the powder to the capacitors, I was in chance of every step. Sometimes,
my supervisor made fun of me: I think we should call you our professor.
The work was full of fun, but troubles still appeared. For instance,
one of my most important experiments was dilatometer that lasted
15 hours, and I had at least 14 samples. What was worse, there was
only one in our lab and the workers needed it during the weekdays.
I wouldn't like to disturb them. Luckily, my supervisor did me a
big favor. With his help I borrowed the key to the lab and got the
permission for working in the weekend. During my training I spend
nearly every weekend in the lab, although I was a little bit tired,
I really enjoyed it. No pain no gain, at last my result became much
better than before, which was the best present to me!
Because of my success our boss asked me to give a presentation
to others. It sounded good, but quite difficult, and I never thought
it before! The powerpoint for the computer was in German as well.
At first I wanted to give it up, but one voice told me you should
cherish every chance, so I turned to my desk and prepared my presentation.
The next day I got congratulation from the staff. From this speech
I became understanding the famous saying: Where there is a will,
there is a way!
How time flies! Three months past quickly, but I learned a lot
from this abroad training. I became mature and confident. This period
will stay in my memory forever. I believe it is the most colorful
time during my whole life.
Thanks to the IAESTE as you give the chance to me that I can put
my dream in to practice; thanks to the EPCOS as your trust and encourage,
which made me full of confidence; thanks to every friendly Austrian
for your help ¡
If I have chance I want to visit Austria again, if possible I want
to say thank you to every one in EPCOS, if possible¡
however, this training is the treasure for my whole life!
